Finding Your Balance With Lagom

When you eventually freed yourself from the mountain of cosy knitted blankets that covered your ‘Hygge’ inspired home, you would have noticed a new lifestyle trend break onto the scene, known as ‘Lagom’.

Lagom is a Swedish word that translates into ‘just the right amount’ and has been adapted by many as a way of life, not just an interior décor trend. While hygge was all about finding momentary blissful comfort with a hot chocolate in hand surrounded by scented candles, Lagom is about living a simplistic, balanced, sustainable life with no more and no less than what is necessary.

Why not incorporate the Lagom philosophy into your life, starting with your home.

You could create a nook in the home where you can retreat when things get stressful. We all need time to take a step back and clear our minds, and a comfortable chair surrounded by neutral colours, natural light, and one or two good books is a great place to regain your balance.

Dispensing with Hygge does not mean dispensing with warmth. Those knitted blankets and throws will still come in handy when it comes to having the heating on less, which will save money and have a positive impact on the environment – both very Lagom. You could also opt for a mid-tone flooring colour like Korlok Warm Ash (pictured below) that is consistent, subtle, and will add just the right amount of cosiness to your space. An extra bonus of Karndean flooring is that it’s warmer underfoot than the natural materials it replicates.

Grey is everyone’s favourite neutral at the moment and it sits very well with the Lagom trend- it’s fresh, clean and makes an impact without being showy. Pair it with a hint of nature by adding hanging baskets or an array of small pot plants and you’ll have yourself a tranquil Lagom haven.

As well as decluttering your home, those who are keen DIY-ers could consider ‘upcycling’ and making the most of what you already have. Getting creative and turning redundant accessories or furniture into something useful ticks many of Lagom’s boxes, including spending more time on our hobbies if you enjoy these kinds of projects. You could even re-use the floors if you have our LooseLay products, as it’s straightforward to lift the planks and place them down elsewhere in the home.
